1 The written account of the family line and birth+ of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2 Abraham became the father of+ Isaac; Isaac, for his part, became the father of Jacob; Jacob, for his part, became the father of Judah and his brothers;+ 3 Judah, for his part, became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar;+ Perez, for his part, became the father of Hezron; Hezron, for his part, became the father of Ram; 4 Ram, for his part, became the father of Amminadab; Amminadab, for his part, became the father of Nahshon; Nahshon, for his part, became the father of Salmon; 5 Salmon, for his part, became the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab;+ Boaz, for his part, became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth;+ Obed, for his part, became the father of Jesse; 6 Jesse, for his part, became the father of David the king.

David, for his part, became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife;+7 Solomon, for his part, became the father of Rehoboam; Rehoboam, for his part, became the father of Abijah; Abijah, for his part, became the father of Asaph; 8 Asaph, for his part, became the father of Jehoshaphat; Jehoshaphat, for his part, became the father of Joram; Joram, for his part, became the father of Uzziah; 9 Uzziah, for his part, became the father of Jotham; Jotham, for his part, became the father of Ahaz; Ahaz, for his part, became the father of Hezekiah; 10 Hezekiah, for his part, became the father of Manasseh; Manasseh, for his part, became the father of Amos; Amos, for his part, became the father of Josiah; 11 Josiah, for his part, became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.

12 Now after the exile to Babylon, Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel; Shealtiel, for his part, became the father of Zerubbabel; 13 Zerubbabel, for his part, became the father of Abiud; Abiud, for his part, became the father of Eliakim; Eliakim, for his part, became the father of Azor; 14 Azor, for his part, became the father of Zadok; Zadok, for his part, became the father of Akim; Akim, for his part, became the father of Eliud; 15 Eliud, for his part, became the father of Eleazar; Eleazar, for his part, became the father of Matthan; Matthan, for his part, became the father of Jacob; 16 Jacob, for his part, became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called the Messiah.

17 All the generations from Abraham to David, therefore, were fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

18 As for Jesus the Messiah, this is how the events surrounding his birth took place:

While his mother Mary was legally bound in betrothal+ to Joseph, but before they married,+ it was discovered that she had through the power of the Holy Spirit conceived a child.+19 Now Joseph, her husband, since he was a righteous+ man,+ did not want to expose Mary+ to public shame, and so he intended to divorce her privately. 20 Well, these things he was considering, when suddenly, in a dream, there appeared to him an angel+ of the Lord. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife. As for the child in her womb, you see, it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that he has been conceived.+ 21 She will give birth to a son, and ˢyou+ are to name him Jesus, ‘the Lord saves,’+ for he will save his people from their sins.”

22 Now all this happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled according to plan:

24 When Joseph woke up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took her as his wife. 25 Yet he did not have intimate relations with her+ until she had given birth to a son. And he named the child+ Jesus.
